Town of Jonesville, Virginia

The Town of Jonesville is a small town with a big heart. Located in Southwest Virginia surrounded by the beautiful mountains of the Appalachian Chain. It was established in 1794 and founded on October 13, 1795 as the County Seat for Lee County and named after Frederick Jones. Jonesville is the second oldest Town west of Roanoke with a population of approximately 995.
The Town Hall is located in the Cumberland Bowl Park so named for its bowl shape. The park is a focal point throughout the year with activities going on for most holidays including a Forth of July celebration with all of your favorite old time competitions and activities. There is also a Festival in the Park sponsored by the Jonesville Women’s Club held on the last Saturday of September of every year, it includes crafts, food, activities, and lots of good old fashioned fun. During the Christmas Holiday season the “Lights in the Park” is held beginning with a parade through Town and many displays of festive lights in the park sponsored by the Lee area Chamber of Commerce and the Town.
Cumberland Bowl Park is also home to the Jonesville Senior Citizens and the American Legion’s Lambert-Fleenor Bays Post 185, chartered in February 1948 and named for the first Lee County casualty of World war I. Also located in the Park is The Lee County Veteran’s Memorial Wall, dedicated on May 24, 2003. It was built through the efforts of The Lee County Veterans Memorial Wall Committee spearheaded by Reed Williams.
In the Civil War the Battle of Jonesville took place on January 3, 1864. Confederate General William E. Jones, assisted by Colonel A. L. Pridemore, defeated a Union Force and captured the battalion. Union troops burned the County Courthouse located on Main Street in the heart of Jonesville in 1864 and the present Courthouse was erected in 1933. The Lee Area Chamber of Commerce, the Lee-Piedmont Chapter of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans and the 37th Infantry each June, sponsors an annual re-enactment of the battle. The action takes place on a nearby farm, with thousands of people attending the event to experience the how the battle was won and to view artifacts, clothing, foods, and more relating to the history of this event.
The Town of Jonesville serves as the hub for local government as well as many state offices. Although quite busy and bustling during the daytime, the Town transforms into a very quiet and peaceful residential neighborhood after the government offices close for the day. This provides an excellent environment in which to live and raise a family. One only needs to drive through Town on a summer evening to see the number of folks walking or visiting one another to understand the sense of community felt here. It’s a nice little Town where you feel your children are safe and folks care about each other.
